“How’s FUK?” is the most common message I receive from my friends. My reply is always, “It’s FUKing great!” The airport code for Fukuoka airport is abbreviated as FUK, which is too fun a acronym to ignore. It took a span of no more than 24 hours of visiting Fukuoka earlier this year to make me quit my job in Tokyo, say goodbye to my friends, grab all my stuff and move to Fukuoka within a month of that visit.
I knew little about Kyushu before moving here. I heard about Kumamoto city (only because of their mascot Kumamon) and Nagasaki city (WWII) but other than that I was woefully ignorant. A close friend of mine was talking about moving to Kyushu around the same time I was visiting Kyushu. They suggested I visit Fukuoka, in particular a shared-office (SALT: West End Fukuoka Share Office) that was looking for creative freelancers and startups to rent their space.
A short train ride from the bustling city center and I arrived at the small countryside station of Imajuku, located right on the coast. I walked to the shared office and upon setting foot inside the wide open office overlooking the bay, I immediately knew I wanted to work there.

SALTに行くために福岡の中心街から、海辺にある小さい田舎町、今宿に電車で向かった。わりと近かった。そして、SALTに入ったとたん、目の前には海が広がっていた・・・。僕はここで絶対働きたい！と思った。

I have lived in big cities most of my life, the notion of working on the beach was only something I saw in Corona beer ads. For the price I was paying in Tokyo rent alone, I could live and cover all my expenses in Fukuoka. Walking around the city, I cannot express how genuinely floored by how big and vibrant the city was. It all began to click for me at that moment; big city, beach life, and half the price of Tokyo.
I met the “Fukuoka Migration Project” members at the SALT shared office, and they helped me move from Tokyo to Fukuoka within a month of leaving my previous company. My quick hop-skip-jump to Fukuoka was a relatively painless affair and probably the best decision I have ever made. I’m now writing this post from the very same beach I saw several months ago; I’d say, “That is FUKing great!”
